Hitchhiking in Mykonos

I am currently in Mykonos, the beautiful Greek island that has captured my heart this summer.

And before my ‘Mykonos Diary’ post, I really wanted to write here a short story.

I hitchhiked for the first time in my life in Mykonos as before I was never put in the position of asking for a ride and my parents rarely took strangers in our car, so it was a brand new contact with the reality.

We were completely taken aback after waiting for no more than 5 minutes while holding a sign with ‘PORT’ written in cap letters when this man driving a small Opel stopped to pick us up. He was nice, polite and completely sorry for the mess in his car caused by his son’s sport equipment.

‘I don’t speak very good English, but I understand more.’

The happiness of finding someone with such a big heart to take some strangers from the middle of nowhere, combined with the great music blasting from the radio, the jaw-dropping views and the luck offered to us by our fate, all these made me extremely happy and blissful, smiling with my entire presence all our short trip.
I was already anticipating that I would reminiscent on these memories even months after.

After being dropped off near the port, we went to the ‘Little Venice’ area where we enjoyed a lemon tea (damn you, September cold)at a small table overseeing the tiny white and blue houses. Despite my nose running, I actually felt blessed.

You know that feeling you get when you are living something incredibly amazing and you just know it’s going to turn up into this perfect memory that you will recall over and over again?

Well, this day was one of those.

And, at the same time, I feel like I left a bit of me there, standing at the table while writing. Maybe in a parallel universe, I am still there, playing with my thoughts and smiling like a silly girl. I also think there is always going to be a Laura out there, in my memories, holding a paper with the word “PORT” scribbled with a violet pen, waving her right hand towards the speeding cars and Vespas and grunting because the sun is in her face.

Have you ever felt like a part of you is still living something that has already happened to you?

Have a great day!

Laura
